Origins and Aims of the Society

The Senglea Historical Society is a non governmental organisation (NGO) that was established in Senglea in 2009.

The society originated when a group of people from this city that have the history of this locality at their heart discussed how the cultural and natural heritage, that has connotations with Senglea, can be protected and restored as needed. Some time has passed and this group decided that a society, with a proper statute and officially registered as a NGO, should be formed.

The aims of the society are to:

identify the cultural and natural heritage.

promote the appreciation of the cultural and natural heritage in collaboration with the authorities.

recommend to the authorities measures and level of protection to cultural and natural heritage.

Senglea City

Senglea, or as it is currently recognised by the Government of Malta, Isla, is a city in which, notwithstanding the losses of patrimony because of various elements including World War II, we find a considerable cultural heritage which deserves appropriate protection.

Among the historical buildings are three churches, bastions, il-Ma-ina, the Dockyard Terrace, various houses in which there lived people who brought honour to Senglea and even to Malta, and others.

This City also nurtured various individuals who held high the City’s name, as well as that of Malta. In fact there are a number of streets named after them.

So that Senglea remains Senglea

What should we do to protect this City? All those who hold dear this City and its cultural and natural heritage and every Senglean should collaborate so that Senglea is protected as it deserves. Senglea was victorious every time it faced threats and now it is time that the honour of this historical City is given the attention it deserves.

This Society has been set up by those who are interested in these aims and to provide leadership and coordination. We urge you not remain passive but to carry a part of this responsibility, whether you are Senglean or a person living in Senglea. Join us so that we can all work towards the achievement of this aim.

This society is autonomous, democratic and without any political bias.
